How do you become a teacher?

  1. Science and Mathematics Academy for the Recruitment and Retention of Teachers (SMAR2T). The goal of this project is to recruit and prepare individuals with a baccalaureate degree in the sciences, mathematics, or a related field to teach at the middle and/or secondary levels. In 15 or 24 months, an individual can earn a Master's Degree in Education while becoming certificated to teach in Missouri.

  2. Temporary Authorization Certificate.
One-year renewable provisional teaching certificate that does not require completion of a teacher education program. For teachers already certified in another area, passing the Praxis II subject exam certifies one to teach in that area. However, without content area major or minor in the given area, this status does not satisfy "highly-qualified teacher" criteria per the No Child Left Behind standards.

  3. "Master of Arts in Teaching", "Alternative Teacher Education Program". Requires bachelors degree, GPA 2.5 of 4.0, Passing Praxis in subject area, 9 hours per year coursework toward certification, mentoring, performance-based teacher evaluation. With two summers of full coursework, this yields a Masters degree in around two years.  References: DESE "Teacher Certification"

  4. Accelerated Teacher Education Program. Similar to "Alternative Program", but trades full-time teaching for college courses, yielding a Masters degree in around 15 months.

  5. Transition To Teaching. Project helps displaced workers, former military personnel, career-changers with TAC/MAT. References: DESE, "Teacher Recruitment, "Teacher Education"
